Welcome! Добро пожаловать!
VESTNIK has been created by The School of Russian and Asian Studies in an effort to effectively encourage the study of Russia and those states formerly a part of the Soviet Union. VESTNIK is a scholarly journal which publishes the best in undergraduate and graduate research on any subject of relevance to that geographic region.
Our fourth issue was to focus on themes in literature, but given the recent emphasis in the news on international politics, we have broadened the focus to include papers on both topics. In politics, "The Bear and the Dragon" documents recent developments in Sino-Russian relations and how those developments pertain to the U.S. "Deconstructing the Millennium Manifesto" analyzes in detail the rhetoric and ideology of President Vladimir Putin.
In literature, "'Irrational' Rebellions Against Socialist Realism" compares Czech and Russian variations on the legend of Faust written under communism. "The Question of Genre" compares the literature of ancient Rus with that of the ancient Anglo-Saxons. "Tolstoy and Dostoevsky" compares the ontology presented in War and Peace and The Brothers Karamazov. Finally, "Seven Days in April" gives a revealing analysis of Chekhov's "The Bishop" using the techniques of New Criticism.
