Language Opens Doors to New Carrers

Language as a Career is a practical course specifically designed to turn the language skills of intermediate and advanced speakers of Russian into marketable, professional tools. Students will not only study Russian, but will also study a specific field such as translation, pedagogy, or journalism in which to apply those language skills and have the chance to experience working in Russia, thus gaining real experience in using these new skills. Curriculum
- Language as a Career -

Russian Language Study
This required class gives you intensive Russian language training at your level, including grammar, phonetics, conversation, and vocabulary.

Seminar: "Living and Working in Russia" 
Visas, work permits, and life in Russia.  Guest speakers outline the professional opportunities in Russia and how best to navigate them.

Plus one of the following track courses:

Rhetoric in the Russian Mass Media (Journalism)
The study of Russian language in mass media and mass communication can provide a useful key to the understanding of modern Russian society, culture and human behavior. This course combines theoretical and practical work to enable students to study Russian broadcasting, the press and cinema. The course provides a broad treatment of the field of communication, and focuses on the production and the analysis of diverse media texts in Russian.

Principles of Translation (Translation)
Introduces students to the theory and practice of translating poetic, dramatic, fictional, essayistic, and technical works from Russian to English and vice versa. The problem of preserving the author’s individual style, the connotative meaning of a word and how to convey it in another language and the principle of stylistic compensation (for idiomatic speech, idioms) are covered as is discussion of the differences in the semantic structure and denotative/connotative meanings.

Principles of Pedagogy (Teaching RSL)
This course combines advanced linguistic studies with a focus on how to explain the differences in Russian to English speakers.  Differences in stylistics, semantics, connotation/denotation in English and Russian.  Teaching methods, presentational style, developing course material, and "handling" a classroom are also taught.

  • Intensive Study of a Russian Writer of Choice
  • 20th Century Russian and Soviet literature
  • Literary Analysis
  • Linguistic Analysis of Russian Prose
  • Brief History of Russian Journalism
  • Problems of Broadcast and Print Media in Russia
  • Advanced Technical Translation
  • Advanced Translation of Prose
  • Advanced Stylistics in Russian
  • Any of a range of mainstream classes

Plus one lab for the track course: 

Independent Study 
Students on this program may elect to do independent study or research. The student is placed with an adviser who will oversee the studies and assist with access to research materials. Students should submit their final papers to the SRAS quarterly journal, Vestnik. More information

Free Resources for Understanding Russia

 
Internship
Students on this program may apply for internship placement at no additional cost. Placements associated with this program will be geared toward your chosen track: at a  newspaper, producing press releases for an organization, teaching an RSL class at a university or institute, or translating at any number of businesses or organizations.  Placement depends on the background of the applicant, their language level, and availability of suitable internship positions. Tours of historic St. Petersburg and Vladimir/Suzdal or Novgorod are included. More info

Summer: June 9 - Aug 1, 2008     Cost: 5 995$
