St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University is invariably recognized in national ratings as one of the top two technical universities in Russia. Established in 1899 by an official decree of Tsar Nicholas II, it has specialized in applied sciences and is today a leading authority in physics, astronomy, ecology, mathematics, and computer progaming and systems. The scope of the university has been expanded several times and now includes internationally recognized programs in other practical studies such as business and political science. Among its graduates are a president (Turkmenistan), a nobel prize laurette, and even chess champion D. I. Bronshtein.
Institute of Int'l Educational Programmes (IIEP)
The Institute of International Educational Programmes (IIEP) is a department within SPbSPU which runs its short-term studies programs for international students and several degree programs taught in English. For those hoping to enter Russian-language university programs, IIEP offers one of the most extensive one-year preparatory language courses for in technical, economic, medical, and biological fields as well as in the humanities and the natural sciences.
The Area
The main campus site is located in the wooded area of Sosnovka (which means "Pine Forest") in the north of the city. The park-like and peaceful character of the campus is stimulating and in contrast to the urban surroundings just a few minutes away.
