Work Study: Translation
- Translate language into a career -

SRAS's Work Study: Translation Program is a practical academic program offering intensive Russian lessons and professional, hands-on translation experience.

- Curriculum -

RS-100/200/300 Russian Language Study  
Students will receive 12 academic hours per week of individual or small-group language lessons. At the end of the semester, the TORFL exam can be taken at no extra charge.

RS-101a Seminar – "Living and Working in Russia"
A one-time seminar (about three academic hours) addressing important issues to those considering working in Russia. Visas, work permits, and daily life in Russia. Employment opportunities in the public and private sectors and how to navigate them.
Semester and Summer:  Credits: N/A;   Ac. Hours: 3

RS-313: Principles of Translation
Introduction to the theory and practice of translating works from Russian to English. The problem of preserving the authorial style and use of stylistic compensation. Connotative and denotative meanings. Differences in semantic structure.

RS-400: Translation in Practice    Syllabus
Students will translate a minimum of 50,000 characters per month as part of a translation internship. All translations are Russian to English. Materials cover subject areas including politics, business, law, and economy. Additionally, the student will complete an original article or research project for the SRAS site. Students spend a minimum of twelve hours per week in our offices and will be expected to work independently outside the office for another eight to twelve hours per week.

*Includes tuition for study as outlined, dormitory accommodation, visa and registration, pre-departure materials, local orientation, health and accident insurance, cultural program, round-trip airport transfers, mobile telephone, and SRAS in-country support. Homestay is available for an additional $3400 per semester and $1700 per summer (both include breakfast). All prices subject to change without notice.

**The stipend is intended to offset any expenses the student might incur as part of the internship including transportation, lunches, Internet, communications, etc. Forty percent of the stipend is dispersed mid-program and the remainder upon the successful completion of the program.

- How to Apply - 

Applicants are expected to have both the English writing skills and Russian comprehension skills to be able to produce well-written and accurate English translations of Russian materials.  

Applicants must apply using SRAS's online applicationIn addition, applicants must: 1) complete both sections of the TORFL1 practice test online; 2) submit two writing samples produced for college-level classes (at least one should be over 10 pages long); 3) submit an additional copy of their resume and statement of purpose.

These materials (except test results) must be emailed to: Josh Wilson, Assistant Director, SRAS, at jwilson@sras.org. Specify in the email that you are applying for the "SRAS Translation Work Study Program" and the academic period(s) you are applying for. Even if these items have been uploaded as part of your SRAS application package, they should be emailed separately to the address given. Students may also be asked to complete a small test translation and/or participate in a telephone interview.
