Summer Work Study
- translate, research, grow -

SRAS's Summer Work Study is a an intensive 10-week integrated program offering students Russian lessons and experience working in a primarily Russian-speaking office environment where they will interact with Russian native speakers on a professional and personal basis. Students on this program receive a financial aid package to assist them in achieving their educational and professional goals.

This program is open to advanced students of Russian only. The successful candidate should be able to accurately translate texts from Russian to English, vocally communicate with Russian-speaking coworkers, and perform research in Russian.

The 2009 program runs from: May 25 - July 31, 2009

- Curriculum -
Cost: $8 495*    Academic hours: 303

Russian Language Study 
Class size for these intensive lessons is small (3-5 students) and the curriculum is designed to meet ACTFL guidelines. The class includes 15 academic hours of small group study plus two hours of individual tutoring each week.

Seminar – "Living and Working in Russia"
A one-time seminar (about three academic hours) addressing important issues to those considering working in Russia. Visas, work permits, and daily life in Russia. Employment opportunities in the public and private sectors and how to navigate them.

Professional Track: Research and Translation
Students spend a minimum of 15 academic hours per week interning in the offices of SRAS partner Alinga Consulting Group. Curriculum will include translating news articles and primary documents on Russian politics, business, law, and economy. In addition, students will write an original article or compete another research project. Read full details

*Includes tuition for study as outlined, dormitory or homestay accommodation, visa and registration, pre-departure materials, local orientation, health and accident insurance, cultural program, round-trip airport transfers, mobile telephone, meal plan, and SRAS in-country support. Prices subject to change without notice.

- Financial Aid -

Students accepted for this program will receive an immediate grant of $1000, applied towards the regular program tuition. Students will additionally receive a transportation and meal stipend of $500 per month.

Students are expected to maintain an attendence record of at least 90% and at least a "B" average on thier course work. Failure to meet these requirements may result in a cessation of stipend payments.

- Application Requirements - 

Applicants are expected to have both the English writing skills and Russian comprehension skills to produce well-written and accurate English translations of Russian materials such as are found in the news section of the Alinga Consulting Group site.  

In addition to creating an account and enrolling online, applicants will be expected to: 1) complete both sections of the TORFL1 practice test online, listing J. Wilson as an instructor; 2) complete a small test translation;* 3) submit two writing samples, one of ten pages and another of two pages;** 4) submit an additional copy of their resume and statement of purpose.

These materials (except test results) must be emailed to: Josh Wilson, Assistant Director, SRAS, at jwilson@sras.org. The email that include that you are applying for the "SRAS Summer Work Study Program." Even if these items have been uploaded as part of your SRAS application package, they should be emailed separately to the address given.

*Test translations will be less than 2200 characters w/spaces. If published, it will be compensated at a rate of  $12 per 2000 characters (w/ spaces). 
**Papers produced for college level classes are appropriate as writing samples.
