SRAS's Work Study: Business Program is an academic program based on SRAS's Russian Studies Semester (RSS). Students will receive intensive, business-focused Russian lessons and study the current sociological, political, and economic factors that are driving Russian business today. At the same time, students will be placed working directly under the COO and CEO of a successful mid-sized international company to help maintain and the further its growth. Past SRAS interns have moved to full-time positions with SRAS partner companies at the end of their programs. - Curriculum - Russian Language Study Students will receive eight academic hours per week of individual or small-group (2-3 students) language instruction designed to meet ACTFL guidelines. At the end of the semester, the TORFL exam can be taken at no extra charge. Seminar – "Living and Working in Russia" A one-time seminar (about three academic hours) addressing important issues to those considering working in Russia. Visas, work permits, and daily life in Russia. Employment opportunities in the public and private sectors and how to navigate them. RS-110: Russia Today Course Syllabus This course looks at the current situation in Russia, including political, economic, and sociological issues. The recent history of Russia's transitional period. Russia's crises, new economic classes, relations with NIS countries, security and intelligence, industry and business, education and demographics. This class consists of fifteen lectures for a total of thirty academic hours. RS-400: Business Internship Students spend a minimum of 25 real hours per week in the offices of SRAS partner Alinga Consulting Group. Students will work directly under its COO and CEO performing market research and assisting with internal and external company communications. Additionally, the student will write an article on a subject related to business in Russia for publication in the Alinga Market Update. Most tasks will be performed in English, but students should be prepared to use their Russian skills on a daily basis, especially for research and for speaking with co-workers. - Dates and Costs - Semester Spring: Feb 1 - May 21, 2010 (Apply by Oct 16, 2009) Fall: Aug 30 - Dec 17, 2010 (Apply by May 17, 2010) Cost: $7 495;* Total Credits: 12 Summer Dates: June 7 - Aug 13, 2010 (Apply by March 1, 2010) Cost: 5 995;* Total Credits: 9 Meal Plan: Breakfast and lunch in the GRINT cafeteria for 15 weeks. Cost: $1200 Home Stay: Stay with a Russian family, includes breakfast for 15 weeks. Cost: $600** St. Petersburg or Kiev: Travel with other students to St. Petersburg (Fall) or Kiev (Spring) for one week. Both destinations include train tickets, accommodation, and bus tour. In St. Petersburg see the Hermitage and Peter and Paul Fortress. In Kiev visit the Lavra (monastery) and Chernobyl Museum. In both destinations free time for exploration either on your own or with the accompanying student coordinators. Cost: $520 *Includes tuition for study as outlined, dormitory accommodation, visa and registration, pre-departure materials, local orientation, health and accident insurance, cultural program, round-trip airport transfers, mobile telephone, and SRAS in-country support. Prices subject to change without notice. Note that eight hours of individual or small-group study is approximately equivalent to fifteen hours of group study (as offered by RSS). Tuition for RS-110 is waived (a $475 value). **Actual cost may vary by semester and location. Cost is in addition to the dormitory fee charged as part of the tuition for the program core. - Application Requirements - Applicants should have advanced to native English skills and intermediate to native Russian skills. Heritage speakers of Russian are especially encouraged to apply. In addition to SRAS's regular application procedures, applicants will be expected to: 1) complete both sections of the TORFL1 practice test online, listing J. Wilson as an instructor; 2) submit two writing samples in English, one of ten pages and another of two pages;* 3) submit an additional copy of their resume and statement of purpose. The email that includes these items must indicate the academic period for which you are applying for work study. Even if these items have been uploaded as part of your SRAS application package, they should be emailed separately to the address given. *Papers produced for college level classes are appropriate as writing samples.
