Anna Shur
Receives Vestnik Jury Award

For Immediate Release

Vestnik---placeholderThe School of Russian and Asian Studies congratulates Anna Shur as the recipient of the $200 Jury Award from Vestnik, The Journal of Russian and Asian Studies for our 19th issue.

Vestnik encourages students to study any subject related to the countries of the former Soviet Union. Vestnik especially encourages students to research underreported subjects with original research into primary documents to expand the scholarly community's understanding of those subjects.

In her work entitled “The History of Russian Language Instruction in the US," Ms. Shur provides a brief yet insightful history of Russian language pedagogy in America. She discusses the teaching materials and methods used as well as how political history has fed into several aspects of the subject – from funding to supplies of native-speaking teachers. In doing so, Ms. Shur helps reveal what has been effective and what has weakened Americans' access to quality pedagogy in a field that is in many ways essential to developing both an understanding of and policy towards Russia. We hope that this paper might be of use not only to future researchers of this subject but also to teachers and policy makers seeking to improve pedagogy, improve US-Russian relations, and improve American education and diplomatic policy.

The Vestnik Editorial Board applauds Anna Shur, a Ph.D. student at the University of Wyoming majoring in Literacy Education with a focus on Second Language Acquisition, for her well-researched, well-written original analysis.

The board would also like to recognize Ms. Shur as well as Keunwon Song and Alexandra Shapiro, who have all worked hard with the board and each other to revise and improve their papers for this issue of Vestnik, The Journal of Russian and Asian Studies.
