While even a brief excursion abroad to see and hear the places, people, and language you've read and wondered about can be invaluable to your studies and future career, true understanding takes time and patience. There will be a certain amount of culture shock and acclimation to go through before you can stop trying to understand the language and culture and start actually living with them. A less philosophical reason for choosing standard periods is that they help disperse the basic costs (such as international travel) over a longer period of study. Also, by signing up for a standard session, overall enrollment costs are lower.
