Professional Track: Research and Translation (Summer)

Students spend a minimum of 15 academic hours per week interning in the offices of SRAS partner Alinga Consulting Group. Curriculum will include translating news articles and primary documents on Russian politics, business, law, and economy. In addition, students will write an original article or compete another research project. Topics for research or writing will be decided between the selected candidate and SRAS based on the student's interests, knowledge, and the needs of the SRAS site.

As part of their professional track, students will:

  1. Translate 6,750 characters** (about three pages) of Russian text to English per week (such as those found in the Alinga Market Update);
  2. Produce one original article or research project of at least 7,500 characters** in English (such as those articles featured in The SRAS Newsletter or research projects as featured in the Library);
  3. Assist in coordinating other projects among staff.

**All character counts are as counted by MS Word's "word count" feature. Spaces are included as characters.

This course is overseen by Josh Wilson who serves as both SRAS's Assistant Director and Alinga's Communication Director. Students will additionally some access to Russian native-speaking professionals to answer questions related to the topics of translation.

Students will receive a grade weighted as follows:

  1. Accuracy of translation: 45%
  2. Style of translation: 20%
  3. Writing or research project: 25%
  4. Work ethic: 10%

Note that due to scheduling restrictions, this program will mean that students will miss many of the weekday cultural events hosted by GRINT. These events are hosted for students free of charge and no monetary compensation is made in connection with these restrictions.
