Irkutsk State Technical University (IrGTU)
Irkutsk, Russian Federation

The University

Established originally in 1930 as the Siberian Mining Institute, today's Irkutsk State Technical University (IrGTU) is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Russia and is among the top universities in Eastern Siberia and the Far East.

Traditions of technical education took root in the 18th century, when the Irkutsk navigational school was founded in 1754 in order to train navigators and land-surveyors. As the industrial potential of the region was developing, the institute grew and developed. Its name was changed first to "Mining and Metallurgy Institute" and then to "Polytechnic Institute" and in 1993 it became "Irkutsk State Technical University."

Over 80,000 full-time, part-time and correspondence students have graduated from IrGTU over the years. At present, there are 13 departments at IrGTU that specialize in engineering and economic subjects. IrGTU enjoys a high reputation for its excellent and highly qualified teaching staff, which now numbers about 1100. Among those who teach and carry out research at the university are approximately 100 academicians, associate members of the Academy of Sciences, professors with Doctorate degree and 600 candidates of science.

Recent events confirm IrGTU position as one of the leading schools in Russia. The university was honored with the opportunity to host a conference of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in May, 1999 to discuss further financial assistance for economical reforms in Russia and a conference dedicated to Mongolian-Russian relations in educational and economical development, with Mongolia represented by members of government.
