Irkutsk State Linguistic University (ISLU)
Irkutsk, Russian Federation

Advantages to Study in Irkutsk
Our students have appreciated Irkutsk for its natural beauty and lack of English speakers. Unlike St. Petersburg and Moscow, Irkutsk offers the possibility of a full immersion experience, without compromising opportunities to experience history and culture. Students interested in native cultures, ecology, Russian/Chinese relations, and Siberian history choose Irkutsk for its central location and well-developed programs. ISLU also offers intensive language courses.

If you truly want to learn Russian at a speaking level seriously look at the Irkutsk program as it will immerse you in a way Moscow and St. Petersburg cannot. Upon my return my Russian professor could not believe the progress I made in only 2 1/2 months. Thank you SRAS for all of your help in making this the excursion of a lifetime.

| History of the University
Due to a high demand for foreign language teachers in Siberia (the region borders many potential trade partners and military forces, and is home to scores of indigenous languages) the USSR Ministry of Education gave special status to the department of foreign languages of the Pedagogical University in 1948, forming a new independent Institute with same profile, but much bigger goals. In 1996 the Institute was renamed again and became a full-fledged University (ISLU).
ISLU is located in the heart of Irkutsk, which was largely formed by exiled Russian nobility and remains a cultural center for Siberia. ISLU offers classical education in linguistics, pedagogy, psychology, history, economics, cultural affairs and a wide selection of degree majors and opportunities for scientific research. ISLU graduates now work in many of the leading universities of North America, Europe, and Asia.
