The University

The history of Far Eastern National University began in 1899, when the Institute of Oriental Studies was established in Vladivostok. During 1920-1923 the Institute merged with several higher state and private schools to become Far Eastern National University (FENU or DVGU). In 1939, the university was closed down for political reasons, and only in 1956 reopened. Presently, there are 20 faculties, 37 departments, 32 majors and 100 concentrations offered at FENU with almost 14,000 undergraduate and 260 graduate students attending. The teaching staff includes 115 Professors, 400 Candidates of Science, and 900 Lecturers.

FENU has departments in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. On April 11, 1994 a branch of Far Eastern State University was opened in Hakodate, Japan where 68 young Japanese students for the first time in history attended a full Russian university course. A similar branch is now being established in Taiwan. FENU Centers for Russian language and culture have been set up at Kyonggi University (Republic of Korea) and Alaska Pacific University (USA). With the direct participation of FESU, departments of Russian language and culture were set up at the Kanto Senior High School (Japan), Tsuruga University (Japan), Dalian Institute of Foreign Languages (China) and Heilongjiang University (China).

FENU remains an important center for research and practical studies in defining Russia's political and economic role in the Pacific Region. Sinology, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese studies, as well as courses in Indology are very popular among Russian students. FENU is also known and strong in fundamental studies as well as law and economics. More than 80 percent of all lawyers in Vladivostok, schoolteachers and interpreters in the Russian Far East and about 70 percent of all the scientists, working at the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are FENU graduates. According to the statistics determined by the Soros Foundation, Far Eastern State University ranks thirteenth among more than 200 higher education institutions of the Russian Federation and seventh in fundamental sciences.
