Position Description

This position supports the work of the director, staff, and students of the Russian and East European Institute at Indiana University. Major duties include counseling students on degree requirements, registration, and career planning; recruiting students into degree and intensive language study programs; assisting students in choosing the academic program that best suits their needs; monitoring the job market and identifying internship opportunities for students; and tracking the career paths of program alumni. Duties will also include supervision of the publication of program information that is distributed in written form through departmental brochures, newsletter, and web pages.

 

Qualifications

Applicants should be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students. Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills, be well-organized, and be computer literate. Master's of Arts is required. Ideal candidate will be familiar with current issues in Russia, East Central Europe, and Central Asia. Previous study of at least one area language required. Position in 19th century Russian prose

Assistant/Associate Professor of 19th Century Russian Prose The UCLA Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures has renewed its search for candidates to fill a professorship in Russian literature, broadening it to include appointment at either the junior (Asst. Professor) or mid-rank (Assoc. Professor) level, effective September 2008. We are seeking candidates with expertise in the area of nineteenth-century Russian prose, in particular the works of the major authors of the Realist period.
Strengths in cultural studies, literary theory or the intersections of literature and history, sociology, political science, philosophy or gender studies are desirable, as is familiarity with a second Slavic language and literature, preferably in the South Slavic area. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a strong research profile and superior pedagogical skills. Native or near native proficiency in English and Russian as well as PhD in hand by the time of appointment are required.

Associate Director, Office of International Education

General: Reporting to the Director of International Education and working closely with staff members and faculty, the Associate Director's duties fall into two main areas: 1) administrative supports for major projects, including the College's Cities in Transition Program, involving curriculum development in Beloit and abroad, faculty seminars, and supports for student projects, and the College's annual Weissberg Program in International Human Rights and

2) supports for the College's program of study abroad including orientation, safety/security, program management, and oversight of study abroad operations. In conjunction with the Cities in Transition program, the project manager teaches a modular preparatory course for program students preparing to study abroad. This is a full-time calendar-year appointment.

The Beloit College Office of International Education is charged with facilitating campus internationalization. As such, it is responsible for off-campus program advising and international student services, including English as a Second Language instruction. It also administers the College's study abroad and exchange programs and facilitates international professional development activities, curriculum development, and other resource development.

Duties:

1. The Associate Director provides supports for the Cities in Transition curricular program and the Weissberg Chair Program in International Human Rights:

o serves as staff member to the faculty groups responsible for the programs

o assists with planning and implementing the programs, including communication, scheduling, publicizing events, facilitating travel and other arrangements, creating and monitoring budgets, and coordinating the arrangements for major events within the programs,

o coordinates student grant programs, including publicizing the grants, coordinating the application process, supporting the work of the selection committees, monitoring grant budgets, and reporting outcomes

o assists with further project planning and development, including proposal writing

2. The Associate Director provides supports for the College's program of study abroad:

o designs study abroad pre-departure orientation materials, designs and implements pre-departure orientation sessions, and maintains and publishes a menu of options for students to build on their study abroad experiences

o works with the director, off-campus studies advisor and faculty to identify and promote appropriate programs for Beloit College students and maintains positive and active relationships with selected study abroad providers

o is responsible for crisis management related to off-campus study, including making sure emergency response protocols are current and training others to respond effectively and quickly to emergencies as needed

o manages selected Beloit College study abroad programs

o facilitates the smooth operation of the College's program of off-campus study, including study abroad and domestic programs

3. The Associate Director is responsible for the Office of International Education in the director's absence.

4. The Associate Director engages in activities supporting the goals of the Office of International Education and the Associate Director's own and others' on-going professional development. The Associate Director may, therefore, assume additional duties from time to time.

5. The Associate Director may represent the office and/or college locally, nationally and internationally and will be expected to travel on occasion, including to sites abroad.

Skills/Qualifications:

1. Master's required, with a focus relevant to international education. PhD preferred.

2. Minimum three years progressively responsible professional experience in educational administration and teaching relevant to the position. Understanding of international, interdisciplinary and experiential education, particularly in the context of liberal arts education. Understanding of the role of study abroad within liberal arts education.

3. Solid understanding of the field of study abroad and trends in the field.

4. Membership in organizations dedicated to international education a plus.

5. Experience or demonstrated ability to develop and monitor budgets.

7. Experience or demonstrated ability to review and evaluate student proposals.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

IREX is seeking a chief of party and a deputy chief of party for a three-year program assisting prospective non-governmental Russian media organizations to become sustainable and independent institutions through support from and interaction with the community of the U.S. and international peer organizations. The Program will facilitate media-sector partnerships between non-governmental organizations in Russia and their counterparts in U.S., Europe and globally.

The successful candidate for Chief of Party will provide leadership and overall management of a multi-faceted program. The Deputy Chief of Party will assist the Chief of Party in fulfilling program goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Provide leadership, vision and direction for the implementation of all program components – training, technical assistance, grant-giving – and ensure that all proposed program objectives and targets are achieved; Manage and develop a Russian staff, including all long and short-term domestic/ international trainers, consultants and subcontractors; Provide training and technical assistance in discrete topics related to media-sector development; Develop and monitor program work plan, and through regular reports provide briefings and analysis to USAID and IREX headquarters on media sector issues; Maintain effective relations and coordination with program donor and local and international partners.

Collaborate with implementing partners to coordinate efforts and share results; and Serve as primary liaison with USAID, the Russian government and IREX headquarters.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be well organized, able to work independently, skilled at handling multiple tasks, diplomatic, and able to adhere to deadlines. Specific qualifications include:

English-language fluency required. Working knowledge of Russian strongly preferred; Specific experience working in media, journalism, media development or related fields, particularly in an international context; Successful management of or experience working on donor-funded technical assistance projects for media or civil society development, with preference for USG funded donor experience; Demonstrated understanding of the political and economic situation in Russia; Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work on a multi-national team; Experience living and/or working in Russia a plus; and Master's degree or equivalent work experience.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures is establishing a lecturer applicant pool from which it may draw from time to time to fill instructional needs (normally part-time) in the following languages and literatures: Belorussian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian and Ukrainian.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of the University of Chicago welcomes applications for a full-time, open-rank, non-renewable lecturer position in Russian literature for the 2007-8 academic year.

Specialization is open, but applicants will be expected to teach a range of courses in Russian literature at both graduate and undergraduate levels and one introductory course in the humanities for first-year students in the College. The Defense Language Institute, Washington Office (DLI-W) has opened a search to fill the following position. There is one position, but hiring will be done at the level appropriate to the successful candidate's qualifications.

The position is open to US citizens ONLY who are eligible for a high-level security clearance.

Instructor for Russian-English Translation, teaching individualized, specialized, intensive courses in sight translation for Presidential Translators at the Washington-Moscow Direct Communications Link (Moscow-Washington Hot Line MOLINK). Other teaching duties include delivering remedial instruction in Russian grammar as necessary; assigning and correcting student translations (Russian to English) on a broad range of topics (non-technical); regular post-instruction maintenance of sight-translation and written translation skills of MOLINK personnel; curriculum and materials development; organization of and participation in interagency pre-and post-instruction evaluation/certification panels. The faculty member must maintain his/her language skills at high levels and stay informed of current events in Russia and foreign events affecting Russia.

Instruction is conducted in an intensive one-on-one setting, four hours/day, five days/week in the Washington, DC office (Crystal City, VA) of DLI. Focus is on acquisition of skills in Russian-to-English sight translation and written translation. Post-instruction maintenance training in both skills is done at MOLINK office, in the same one-on-one setting, four hours/day, four days/week, to include evening hours no later than 2000 hours. Occasional travel to Russia may also be required.

Summer Teaching Positions in Russian
Beloit College
June 7 - August 10, 2007

A senior instructor and graduate teaching assistants are needed for Beloit College¹s summer intensive Russian program (June 7, 2007 - August 10, 2007).

In 2007, we expect to offer first- through fourth-year Russian. Each level, with enrollments ranging from five to twelve students, has one instructor and one graduate teaching assistant. Instructors collaborate with each other, the language coordinator, and the CLS director on curriculum, syllabi, and instruction. Duties include classroom teaching and evaluation, and assistance with organizing cultural activities for the program.

Instructors will be expected to live on campus (single occupancy), share lunch and dinner with the students in the dining commons, and be available to students evenings and weekends.

Minimum qualifications for senior instructors include an M.A., teaching experience preferably in an immersion environment, superior proficiency in Russian and advanced proficiency in English. An advanced degree in Russian, applied linguistics, or foreign language education is desirable. (For graduate teaching assistants, an M.A. in progress is required). Salary is competitive, and includes room and board. Employment is contingent upon new employees providing documents verifying U.S. citizenship or, for non-citizens, documents verifying legal permission to work in the United States.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a non-tenure-stream Lectureship to begin September 1, 2007. Initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal.

The new Lecturer will serve as the departmental Russian Language Coordinator and will teach a combination of language and non-language courses. Applicants must have 1) superior Russian language proficiency suitable for teaching language at all levels as well as content-based courses in Russian and 2) superior English language proficiency suitable for teaching both small seminars and large lecture courses in English.

PhD in hand by the beginning of the autumn 2007 semester strongly preferred.
