Он еще пока с трудом произносит по-нанайски "Моя фамилия Маркус", но строгий преподавательский состав найхинской школы с удовлетворением отмечает - прогресс на лицо. Дэвид уже изучил программу 5 класса и сейчас осваивает, пожалуй, самое сложное - формы и спряжения глаголов. | He still has difficulty pronouncing his surname, Marcus, in Nanai, but the strict teachers at his Nanai school approve of his progress. David has already completed a five-class program and is now studying what is perhaps the most complex aspect of learning a language - forms and conjugations of verbs. |
В местной школе 20-летний студент из Балтимора Дэвид Маркус пропадает с утра до ночи. Далекий и столь загадочный для него язык северных народов - главная тема диплома. В школьном музее этнографии он, пожалуй, самый частый гость. С помощью экспонатов Дэвид открывает для себя историю народов Приамурья | David Marcus, a 20 year old student from Baltimore, disappears inside a local school from morning until night. The main topic of his senior thesis is the distant and mysterious language of the northern people. He is perhaps the most frequent visitor to the school museum of ethnography. With the aid of the exhibits, David unfolds the history of the peoples of the Amur Region. |
В найхинской школе практикант из Америки еще и преподает свой родной английский. В сельской школе попросту нет учителя иностранного, и Дэвид подтягивает знания у старшеклассников и учит алфавит с третьеклашками. С произношением, шутит, у них вроде бы все в порядке, а вот грамматика немного хромает. | The American student also teaches his native English language in the local Nanai school. The rural school simply has no foreign teachers. David refines the knowledge of upperclassmen and teaches the alphabet to third graders. With pronunciation, he jokes, they seem to do fine, but their grammar is a bit weak. |
Остановился Дэвид у местной учительницы нанайского языка. Своего куратора он может часами расспрашивать об этнографии. Когда появились первые села в низовьях Амура, сколько жителей сейчас в Найхине, а главное, почему нанайцы теперь уже почти совсем не говорят на родном языке. И лишь за бытовыми делами он на время забывает об учебе. Колоть дрова - это пока в новинку, поэтому нужно полностью сосредоточиться на процессе. | David studies under a local teacher of Nanai language. For hours he may question his adviser about ethnography: When were the first villages settled in the lower reaches of the Amur River? How many inhabitants currently live in Naikina? And, above all, why do Nanais hardly speak their native language? It is only for household affairs that he puts aside his studies for a while. He still considers splitting firewood a novelty and must therefore fully concentrate on the process. |
Для него житейские трудности российской глубинки не в тягость. Может и поколоть дрова, и затопить печь, не смущают и удобства на улице. Чтобы понять носителей культуры и языка, нужно хотя бы немного пожить их "настоящей" жизнью. | For him, everyday hardships in a remote Russian village are not a burden. He is able to split firewood and light an oven. Having to use outdoor plumbing is not an embarrassment. In order to understand the practitioners of a culture and language, one must live their “real” life for a while. |

На вопрос "зачем?" он без колебания отвечает: "Я почему-то очень люблю Россию". А еще он хочет, чтобы американцы больше узнали о национальностях большой страны. В планах Дэвида - после Найхина посетить еще два нанайских села в Хабаровском крае. Этот цикл исследований продлится до конца лета. | To the question “why,” he answers without skipping a beat: “For some reason I really love Russia.” He want Americans to learn more about the nationalities in this large country. After his stay in Naikina, David plans to visit two more Nanai villages in the Khabarovsk Territory. He will continue this cycle of research until the end of summer. |
Главная особенность этого образовательного тура в том, что Дэвиду не нужно сдавать никаких экзаменов, лишь итоговое собеседование с куратором в Дальневосточном гуманитарном университете. | These educational travels are not rooted in David needing to pass any test; he needs only to take a final interview with an adviser at Far Eastern University of the Humanities. |
Его отпустили сюда под честное слово, но Дэвид, как студент ответственный, посещает все занятия и ведет исследовательскую работу. В будущем он планирует поступить в аспирантуру и написать книгу о жизни в далеких нанайских деревнях. | He was allowed to come here on only his word of honor but, as a responsible student, David attends all his classes and conducts research. In the future, he plans to enter graduate school and to write a book about life in the distant Nanai villages. |
